Extensive wolf culling in Norway

Luonto-Liiton susiryhmä - The Wolf Action Group, on behalf of concerned citizens and inhabitants in Finland, would like to plea to the Norwegian parliament and the government to stop the wolf culling in Norway and take care of its wolf population for future generations.
Extensive wolf culling in Norway

The regional large carnivore committees in Norway have decided to cull altogether 34 wolves in the 2020/2021 winter, of which 10 animals (two wolf packs) shall be culled within the wolf zone. There have been registered around 70 wolves in Norway in 2020, this means that the regional authorities are planning to cull 1/2 of the wolf population found on Norwegian territory.

This large-scale culling is undertaken despite the fact that the wolf is categorized as critically endangered in Norway and is strictly protected by law. Culling in such a scale is in breach of the Bern Convention on the protection of wildlife that is legally binding to Norway. The Bern Convention obliges Norway to ensure a viable wolf population.

We are deeply affected by this sad course of action. It is unacceptable that the official policy of the Norwegian authorities is aimed at keeping the wolf population in Norway permanently on the verge of extinction and as weak as possible. This is especially worrying in light of the ongoing nature crisis and mass extinction of species – one of the largest and fastest in the history of the planet. It is therefore essential to preserve large carnivores as keystone species and as part of our common natural heritage and legacy.

It is disappointing to see that short-term economic and political benefits are given priority over the need to ensure that the wolf population becomes viable in Norway and in Scandinavia.

We call upon the Norwegian parliament and the government to take a turn towards a policy that prioritizes ecological concerns and animal welfare as soon as possible.

Yours Sincerely,
