| Unprotected old-growth forests in Northern Sweden | |
|
KURSUVAARA, ÖVERTORNEÅ This is a small, 100 hectare old-growth forest in very poorly protected part of Sweden. It is acutely threatened by more than 50 hectares of clearcuts by Sveaskog. From the planned logging sites 51 occurences of red-listed old-growth forest fungi species were found in only couple of hours’ inventory. Despite the history of some selective cuttings the biodiversity and old-growth forest structure of this area is very well preserved. |
