The Last of the Last
The Old-growth Forests of Boreal Europe

The unique maps of the last remaining old-growth forests in Finland were published in Helsinki on May 10, 2000. The Swedish and Norwegian maps will be published during the weeks 19 and 20.

The Last of The Last -report includes
- six map pages
- history of land use
- ecology and protection situation in Norway, Sweden, Finland and northwest Russia

The situation of the boreal old-growth forests is crucial. The natural ecosystems of Fennoscandia are nowadays manipulated by the modern forest management, only few fragments of old-growth forest is left.

The situation in northwest Russia is slightly better. The potential for maintaining the biodiversity of European old-growth forests exists in still vast forest areas. Unfortunately, also these forests are poorly protected and they are being logged down at a high speed.

The member organizations of Taiga Rescue network continue surveillance of the actions of forest industry and governments. The future of the last remaining old-growth forests have to be secured.
