Examples of unprotected state-owned old-growth forests in eastern and northern Finland

Old-growth forest in Northern Karelia, eastern Finland. Kuomavaara- area in Nurmes municipality. Area is threatened by loggings - this photo is taken on the planned roadline area.

Protection program for state-owned old-growth forests of Finland was compiled in several steps in 1992-96. Programmes were based on extensive field surveys by the nature protection unit of the Forest and Park Service which manages the state-owned lands. In some cases field work was done by the Regional Environment Centres.

The surveys identified more than 2000 square kilometers (200 000 ha) of old-growth forests in state-owned lands of Finland. The decisions of the Counsil of State (the Government) protect, however, only about 850 square kilometers (85 000 ha) of the old-growth forests.

The Nature League has been surveying and watching the majority of old-growth forests which are still basicly unprotected. Finnish environmental NGOs are campaigning to protect all the old-growth forests which were identified as valuable areas.
