Old-growth forest logging
by governmental Forest and Park Service

September 1999
Koivuvaara, Suomussalmi

In the inventory of old-growth forests of Northern Finland, Koivuvaara was regarded as "A-area", the natural values of which were to be maintained by the means of the landscape ecological planning (ELP). ELP protected few narrow corridors scattered around the area. The state enterprise Forest and Park Service outlined the corridors by logging the surroundings in September 1999.

Timber from Koivuvaara (Suomussalmi municipality in Eastern Finland) was purchased by StoraEnso and UPM-Kymmene.

Logging old-growth forests is short-sighted stupidity and simply wrong. If you agree or are puzzled by the pictures in these pages, please, do not hesitate to contact the new Finnish minister for environment and the logger Forest and Park Service.
