Old-growth forest logging
by the Forest and Park Service

in winter 1999:

Haukilammet-Huttusenvaara, Kuhmo

Haukilammet-Huttusenvaara old-growth forest is located in Northern Kuhmo.
In close vicinity is Pirttivaara old-growth forest which is under continuous logging threat.

Spruce pulp wood for UPM-Kymmene.
Old pines lying in waste pile in front.

Pine pulp wood for StoraEnso.
Old pine trees with fire scars and decay do not qualify as sawn timber.

Forest management practices of the Forest and Park Service are surprising. The enterprise educates its personnel to recognise threatened species and other natural value indicators - but still does not know how to leave decaying trees to maintain biodiversity.

Logging old-growth forests is short-sighted stupidity and simply wrong. If you agree or are puzzled by the pictures in these pages, please, do not hesitate to contact the new Finnish minister for environment and the logger Forest and Park Service. You can also tell your opinion to the buyers: feedback forms and questionnaires are found in the web pages of UPM-Kymmene and StoraEnso.
