Clearcut in old-growth forest
by governmental Forest and Park Service
September 1998
in Eastern Finland

Clearcut near small lake. Only couple of trees were left on the shoreline.

Governmental Forest and Park Service clearcutted old-growth forests in Kuikkalammit-area close to the Finnish - Russian border on September 1998 in Eastern Finalnd, municipality of Kuhmo. Forest and Park Service did not contact the Regional Environment Centre although it has promised to do so in cases where loggings are planned in the areas which have been defined as valuable old-growth forests by Finnish environmenmtal NGOs.

Clearcuts took place in small forest patches between small lakes and mires. Hundreds of years old Scots pines, dead trees and old trees on the ground were found on the logging sites. There was no doubt that the area in question was valuable old-growth forest.

Scots pines over 250 years old on the logging site.
