State enterprise Forest and Park Service is continuously logging the last fragments of old-growth forests in eastern and northern Finland. These photos were taken in Ulvinsalo area, Kuhmo municipality, in november 1997.

Old-growth forest area in question was one of the areas which had been proposed to be protected by Finnish environmental organisations, e.g. with the GREEN BELT OF FENNOSCANDIA- project.

According to an agreement between ENSO, UPM, Forest and Park Service (FPS) and Ministries of Forestry and Environment , loggings in these areas should be planned in co-operation between Forestry and Nature Protection Units of FPS and Environmental Authorities. Forestry Unit of FPS did not care - it planned and carried out the loggings without telling anything to other parties of the agreement.

PULPING THE OLD-GROWTH FORESTS FOR EUROPEAN PAPER

Pulping old-growth forests for European market. UPM-Kymmene and ENSO are main buyers of old-growth wood from Finnish State. Finnish Forest Industry is unwilling to make any voluntary commitments on moratorium in old-growth forest loggings in Finland. "We purchase wood only from sources that do not compromise the conservation of biodiversity", says ENSO.
