Outside protected areas which are covering only 3,5% of Finnish productive forests, there is hardly any old-growth forest left in Finland. The very last fragments of old-growth forests outside protected areas are being logged by state enterprise, Finnish Forest and Park Service.

Nurmes municipality, Kaihlajarvi-area, November 1997.
Area was listed in Pan-European IBA-project (IBA for Important Bird Areas). Several endangered bird and polypore species had been found from the area. Statements by scientists working in University of Helsinki and Finnish Environmental Insitute confirmed the nature values.
