Case study: Ruostekorpi

Logging the key-biotope. This was a herb-rich old-growth forest before "sustainable Finnish forestry".

"Several extremely rare, endagered species, e.g. Diplomitoporus crustulinus have been found in this forest area." Mr. Tuomo Niemelä, University of Helsinki.

"Valuable Habitats Are Left Undisturbed by Forestry", Forest and Park Service

Common landscape wiew in Eastern Finland. Old-growth forests, which used to cover large areas, have been fragmented by large clear- cut areas. FPS is now making "ecological landscape planning" in these forests.

Who is controlling FPS? FPS itself.

Forestry activities must not be allowed to harm biodiversity. The FPS´s entire staff is trained to take the natural values of the forest into account in its daily work. The success of forestry in environmental management terms is monitored by making inspections of areas cut for regeneration purposes.". Forest and Park Service.

Director of FPS´s nature protection unit refused to do such inspections in this case. According to him, inspections are made randomly and in this case there is no reason to take further action ... If so, why not to do such inspection? Wouldn`t it be good for FPS`s image to prove NGO`s, scientists and environment authorities wrong when they claim that FPS is logging valuable forests against its own guidelines..?

ENSO, UPM-Kymmene and VAPO bought the timber.
