Clearcutting in old-growth forests in eastern Finland
by governmental Forest and Park Service.
December 1999 - January 2000
Photos above are taken in December 1999 in Vattuvaara old-growth forest area in municipality of Kuhmo, eastern Finland. Governmental Forest and Park Service started large-scale clearcuttings in Vattuvaara area by clearcutting 8 hectares of old-growth forest in north-eastern side of the area. This clearcut destroyed 4 habitats of endangered fungi species. More loggings are planned.
During December 1999 and January 2000 Forest and Park Service has continued logging in Kukkuri old-growth forest in municipality of Hyrynsalmi.
Most recent old-growth forest destruction is taking place in Elimyssalo area in municipality of Kuhmo near Russian border. Clearcutting started on Sunday, January 9.
