The biggest threat to the forests in the world is the international forest business. The main reason to the forest destruction is the expanded usage of wood-based products.

Consumption of paper, including newspaper and carton board, grows faster than consumption of any other wood-based product.

The 20 % of the world population living in the industrialized countries consume 70 % of world's paper. The poorer 80 % manage with the rest 30 %.

The long history of paper production and consumption in Europe and North America can be seen in the forests. Forest management has converted nearly all of the natural forests into commercial forests, and the rest of the natural forests are still being logged for the forest industry.

Finnish forest companies are key players in field of forest business, especially now that their are getting more and more global. After acquiring Consolidated Papers, Stora Enso will be the number one producer of paper and board in the world with its turnover of some EUR 12 000 million.

The wood procurement from the last Finnish old-growth forests continue.
